Where better for a carnivore to indulge in the celebration of all things fleshy than a German restaurant filled with copious amounts of wurst? We arrived at this teutonic tavern on a Saturday for the special fondue and raclette night, and while ales weren’t on the cards for us no-carb folk, we still planned on getting our money’s worth before yodelling off home .
The cheery lederhosen-clad staff showed us to our sturdy wooden table and we made straight for the buffet. A spread of starters awaited us: the white cabbage was particularly good, as was the baby shrimp salad and the generous selection of cold cuts which my Bavarian dinner date assured me were thoroughly echt. We piled up salami, smoked salmon and giant prawns and moved on.
My next plate was a festival of Viennese and white sausage show-cooked to order. While undoubtedly authentic, these were a little reminiscent of dodgy fairground hotdogs, and my date’s ‘HP’ sausage was dismissed as a banger you’d buy for a cheap barbeque. But the sauerkraut was a delicious sweet and vinegary delight and the ‘schweinsroulade’ (pork wrapped in sauerkraut) was superb – moist, tender and oozing with flavour.
The fondue arrived and we skewered delicious hunks of red meat and chicken and thrust them into the hot oil, dipping them in sauce and congratulating ourselves on the lack of carbs. Avoiding the cheese fondue – we wouldn’t want to get involved with bread, after all – we felt we’d behaved well enough to deserve the raclette. This proved a disappointment; a rubbery plate of cheese, swimming in oil, which my date declared too visually unappetising to taste. Overall, however,Hofbräuhaus was a good bet for a low-carb devotee trying to maintain ketosis: it’s just a shame you can’t indulge in beer…
