Al Mawal

Having long proved to be a popular destination with both locals and tourists, Al Mawal could be accused of resting on its gastronomic laurels Reviews

Having long proved to be a popular destination with both locals and tourists, Al Mawal could be accused of resting on its gastronomic laurels. The food is ample, the simple décor delightful, and the live entertainment draws diners from all over Dubai. What lets Al Mawal down is the staff.

Pushy sales tactics — plonking down food not ordered and then charging for it, being unforgivably ignorant, refusing to show diners the menu while insisting they have the ‘special’ and then strutting around like snooty peacocks — all make for an uncomfortable dining experience, despite the belly dancing. The food, at least, doesn’t disappoint. The mezze-style starters including a creamy hummos topped with chickpeas and a tangy mutabbal are rich accompaniments to the warm and light flatbread served liberally to enthusiastic diners. The cheese pastries are also highly recommendable, with paper-thin pastry (reminiscent of spring rolls) pumped full of melted, mouth-burning, soft cheese. A safe option for the main course is the hammour — juicy and moist with a slight crunch to the grilled exterior and covered with a generous dousing of garlic and butter.

Hardened carnivores will get a kick out of the mixed grill with the usual suspects of lamb, lamb and more lamb (and a little chicken), prepared as chops, koftas, and tender barbeque-tasting cutlets. Accompanying al dente fresh vegetables also give the course a tasty freshness. The obligatory fresh fruit dessert platter comes as a pick-and-mix standard: juicy kiwi, lychees, watermelon and sharp pineapple mingle together to form a DIY fruit salad. It hardly breaks the mould, but it’s a pleasant enough distraction while you prepare to do battle with the bullying peacocks for your bill.

We, Mawal fans & Lebanese cuisine lovers wonder why & how Time Out magazine accepted to keep on its Web main page a weird and destructive comment for years, if not to be called a campaign against one of the most renowned and successful Lebanese restaurants appreciated by the majority of the Lebanese & Middle Eastern community.

We beleive that the negative comment has a malicious motive behind it to serve other competitors otherwise how can a non-Lebanese and non-specialized person in Lebanese cuisine can judge a cuisine that is not to his native one and the most important of it all, nothing GIVE HIM THE RIGHT TO COMMENT THE WAY he did, unless it is a conspiracy against the most successful Lebanese restaurant in town.

As a proof, you only have to read the comments of experts expressed on the WHAT'S ON magazine web pages, in addition to 9 consecutive Best Restaurant awards won year after year....... Or Join a Mawal evening on any given day in order to confirm the complaint, otherwise your insignificant remarks will remain IGNORED for us!!!!!

When I first read the above article, I directly revealed a hidden hate to an unfortunate “one night” experience and that you expected a personal recognition from Mawal side and never had it. I was disturbed to read such a comment on a widely known and famous “Mawal” restaurant,

Personally and like many others that I constantly meet during my journeys at Mawal in Al Bustan Rotana, I never faced any inconvenience as such read through your article. On the contrary, I am always strived to be served in the best means.

I will retain my loyalty to “Mawal” restaurants, being the best Lebanese cuisine destination throughout the UAE. And with all my duly respect to your comments, I cannot but to judge them as “personal” against those highly ranked restaurants striving to reflect the finest and most dedicated image of the modern restaurants management.

  • Would you go back to this restaurant? No

When I called for reservation I feel its my biggest mistake because I choose this place
Very bad service, no one in this place has read before about the hospitality
How come a big company likes ROTANA recruiting this staff?
