From the off, it’s clear that The Butcher Shop & Grill knows its steaks: if the huge butchery counters aren’t a giveaway, then the pamphlets on each table, detailing cuts of meat, cooking techniques and more, should give you a clue. Founded in Jo’burg, South Africa, the chain has now expanded to the Middle East and boasts three venues in Dubai: our favourite is still the JBR branch, with an atmospheric outdoor area overlooking The Walk. Choose from a variety of cuts, from the great-value rump to the pricier fillet: there’s even a choice wagyu rib-eye that’s a steal at less than Dhs200. The rest of the menu is unashamedly carnivorous, boasting several South African specials (boerewors, sosaties), some voluptuous burgers and a scattering of fish dishes. The no-frills decor is functional at best, while the service is efficient, if a little brusque, but for no-nonsense steaks this is still, quite rightly, a popular spot.
