Tucked away in the Old Town residences, Mezza House is worth seeking out for outstanding Arabic cuisine. Set over two low levels with both indoor and outdoor seating (ideal for puffing on a grape and mint shisha and ogling at the Burj Dubai), the restaurant has a casual, neighbourly vibe and it’s staffed by some of Dubai’s friendliest waiters.
Your mind may boggle at such a fabulous array of dishes native to Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine, but the waiters are knowledgeable and happy to recommend their favourites. If you’re after a romantic evening, steer very clear from the shankleesh salad: though tasty, the tomatoes and onions mixed with the namesake fetta-esque goats cheese do more for the palette than the breath. A particular standout is the kebbeh labneh, balls of minced meat swimming in garlic and herb infused yoghurt. If you want to order a Palestinian/Jordanian Mashawi main (a house speciality) you need to phone ahead the day before. Time Out tried one: the mousahakan roll (pita bread topped with sautéed red onions, pine nuts and sumac and half a roasted chicken) was well worth the wait.
