The menu is new, but dining in Al Mahara is still a dizzying experience, reminiscent of eating your meal inside a kaleidoscope. An expansive range is available on the new menu, most of which falls under the simple brasserie category. There is something for everybody whether you are a cautious eater or prepared to try more adventurous dishes. Prices are hearty, but you are eating in the world’s only seven star hotel. Staff, as you would expect, are slick and professional if a little humourless.
You are teed up for your meal with warm, chunky, fresh baked breads, including a beetroot variety, all served with butter (for the traditional) and also oil and balsamic (for the trendier diner.). The cep risotto was indulgently creamy, with a rich flavour and just the right amount of bite to the rice - a hungry man’s portion. Smoked salmon with salmon tartar and caviar was an exquisitely simple production with pristine presentation and good flavours.
The lamb loin was also very tender and was well complimented by the risotto and roasted vegetables (though the latter were rather slippery and bland.) The guinea fowl was nicely cooked, but the truffle mash was extremely salty and the vegetables were on the raw side of crunchy. The homemade ice creams and sorbets — a three dimensional display including fresh berries and a huge wafer — were wolfed down.
Cheesecake came with lovely poached rhubarb. We loved the new menu and enjoyed our meal. We will be back to see if the chef can do justice to every simple detail of every dish.
