From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2008
A trip to Al Mahara at the iconic Burj Al Arab begins with a ride in a submarine. Well, not really.
Buckled into seats inside a cleverly decked-out elevator, complete with video screen portholes, flashing images of weed-strewn rocks and a rippled seabed, the restaurant even provides a sea captain to help steer your journey.
The real action begins when the fairground submersible grinds to a halt and you enter the main restaurant. The huge aquarium, The Oval, around which the dining tables are arranged, is truly jaw-dropping, with all kinds of marine life – including eels and blacktip reef sharks – darting about and throwing you wide-eyed stares.
Once you have devoured the flavoured bread rolls, tuck into the wagyu carpaccio as one of the many tasty starters. The delicate slivers of massaged cow arrive decorated with a sharp cipriani sauce, arugula and truffles, while the king crab and coriander cannelloni – made of soft, fresh pasta and drizzled in a tangy lime sauce – is just as excellent.
The mains are likewise impressive. The halibut, full, flaky, and accompanied by deep-fried courgette and a thick, creamy mushroom and champagne sauce is a lesson in how to prepare fish. And, for the ultimate follow-up, make sure you order the chocolate sphere. It’s served up looking like little more than a dark brown cricket ball.
But as the waiter pours a rich Earl Grey tea-infused chocolate ganache over the top, the shell bursts open to expose the fruit within. It’s the ideal way to cap off a truly excellent, highly memorable dining experience. And not just for the rather sizeable dent it leaves in your wallet...
