From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2008
Time Out knows lots of people who love Tagine, but right now it’s got very little to do with the food. Starters impress – in particular the wonderful pastilla (filo pastry filled with pigeon meat, crushed almonds, scrambled eggs and a light dusting of cinnamon and icing sugar), but mains (expect the standard double act of couscous and tagines) can be hit and miss.
The lamb in the couscous tends to be hard, while the couscous itself suffers from an over generous use of butter. Tagine soussi is more palatable – a generous portion of juicy soft lamb and vegetables – but desserts disappoint.
Skip the assortment of Moroccan sweets (reminiscent of shop-bought cakes) and finish with powerfully refreshing mint tea. So if the food isn’t fabulous, what’s the appeal? The answer lies in the impressive setting.
The walk in – past a herd of golden camels and through an imposing wooden door – is highly atmospheric. And the actual restaurant, replete with velvet drapes and low level lighting and seating, is a romantic proposition in itself. We hope the kitchen returns to form again soon.
