Tucked away in the Eden Hotel, Il Rustico is the Italian restaurant of choice for pasta devotees who want to avoid spending an arm and a leg on their spaghetti fix. A farmhouse-style décor prevails: exposed brickwork is covered with trailing vines and exposed bottles, and a rustic chest of drawers heaves with antipasti.
Lively music adds atmosphere to proceedings, and the swift, chirpy service puts punters immediately at their ease.
The keynote at Il Rustico is authenticity – the pizzas, for example, are freshly thrown and cooked in a proper Italian oven, and the ingredients are of extremely high quality. Having not visited for a year or so, we decided to check in again, and weren’t disappointed. The true discovery this time was the madly-popular spirelli di boscaiola, potentially the most richly comforting dish in Dubai. This feelgood creation comprises a vast dish of spiralled pasta, draped in a hammy, mushroomy, sun dried tomatoey sauce that kisses you on both cheeks, ruffles your hair and sends quivers of glee running down your spine.
Slightly less overwhelming, but nonetheless excellent was a deep, multilayered tomato risotto, more than enough for a horde of ravenous bambini, and a speciality pizza, loaded with crispy pepperoni, peppers and onion. Starters were equally well rendered – a flawless caprese with great wheels of milky mozzarella and a slick carpaccio with crumbled parmesan.
We’re happy to say that little has changed since our last evening at Il Rustico. There is, however, one small difference – the last time we were there the place was relatively quiet. The secret is well and truly out of the bag now, though, and getting a table without booking is no longer a sure thing.By Rob Orchard
