The squeals of recognition from staff as the tables fill up suggest that Teatro tempts diners back with incredible regularity, and as a consequence the place buzzes with the energy of a full house. Heavy drapes, atmospheric candlelight and a stylish glassed-in wine store are juxtaposed with iconic black and white pictures of Hollywood thespians of yesteryear. The menu is equally eclectic, with pizza and pasta offerings from Italy, sushi and sashimi from Japan and fleeting culinary entries hailing from Thailand, China and India. Independent cooking stations are dedicated to each cuisine and are adorned with smiling chefs emitting convincing ‘food is my life and I love my job’ vibes.
With crispy tempura prawns, vegetable fritters and duck rolls bursting with hoi sin flavour and sizeable chunks of oil-free meat, the Asian sampling plate is a sound choice for a starter. My partner continued the Far Eastern theme by opting for a main of Asian noodles with black pepper beef. The appreciative silence and ensuing empty plate spoke volumes about the tender, juicy dish and gave me a few minutes peace in which to sample my nigiri tower. The eight pieces of sushi were beautifully presented, with fresh pink ginger and intricately-shaped wasabi, but sadly the fish didn’t taste particularly fresh or flavoursome: not good enough considering the high price.
But enthusiastic ticks in boxes returned for the Teatro dessert sampler. For Dhs41 two people can moan appreciatively through a selection of sweets, although the molten chocolate soufflé with caramelised bananas, ice cream and vanilla foam is worth keeping all to yourself. Teatro has a loyal following and it’s easy to see why. The cosmopolitan atmosphere, excellent service and sound food with intermittent flashes of ingenuity is – judging by the lack of empty chairs – a winning formula.
