Topkapi

Kebabs feature very strongly on the menu at the Taj Palace’s Topkapi (04 223 2222), Dubai’s sole hotel-based Turkish restaurant. Named after the stronghold from which the Ottomans ruled, it’s a beautiful place, with traditional wood furniture and a large central fountain. The menu is full of intriguing-sounding dishes, and we have had excellent meals here before, however on our most recent visit the food had taken a real nosedive.
We ordered a selection of hot and cold mezze, almost all of which was disappointing – traditional içli köfte meat dumplings filled with cracked wheat were overly dry, and the kol böregi peynirli, flaky pastry filled with cheese, was thick and musty. However, we did enjoy the traditional Turkish drinks – the ayran savoury yoghurt drink, and the serbeti rosewater.
