From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
El Malecon doesn’t exactly scream fine dining, especially with its dancefloor and graffiti-strewn walls. It’s better known as a raucous nightspot that serves nicely mixed cocktails and has live bands and DJs. But that shouldn’t necessarily put you off its food offerings.
On the menu you’ll find a mix of seafood, steaks and salads, all with Latin American flair – even oysters make an appearance (but you’ll only get three as a starter). The camarones al coco are impressive as an appetiser or a bar snack – four plump prawns in breadcrumbs, hanging over half a coconut shell, half filled with pineapple chutney.
Stick with seafood for mains as well, as dishes like the ropa vieja, which is a mix of shredded beef and veggies, rice and fried banana, fail to inspire.
We’d definitely recommend El Malecon for decent bar food preceding the shenanigans of a big night out, but if it’s purely food you’re after, maybe this isn’t quite the place.
