In busy Satwa, Rydges Hotel stands like an ocean of calm, and upstairs, its Four Seasons restaurant peers out on the chaos with an easy gaze.
Certainly the hypnotic car lights circling the main roundabout are far more interesting than the largely bland interior, but this restaurant has far more interesting things to offer than design tips.
Chinese restaurants do tend to opt for the ‘more is more’ philosophy, but even among the big servers, Four Seasons is rather exceptional. Opt for the imperial banquet (for two believe it or not) then watch your face sink (and your belly grow) as at least a dozen king-sized dishes are wheeled out and piled on a table straining to keep its composure.
By the 11th dish, you’re not really tasting anything; but among many treats, the spare ribs are particularly heavenly (less so the glutinous chicken wings), and the lobster tail is salty but delicious. The quality of the cooking is pretty consistent, and you certainly get value for money; although the shame of leaving food on your plate is the pay off.
Nothing here is delicate or dainty – it’s just a full-on food fest. Sit back, loosen your belt and indulge.
