Mak’s Food
Karama’s most intimate Indo-Chinese eaterie 1 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
You can see the bright lights of Dubai from Mak’s Food, but they certainly seem a long way off. Situated on a street corner in lively Karama, this Chinese restaurant is as basic as it gets, with plastic garden furniture lining the roadside and equally plastic food on the tables.
However, on a warm sunny evening, when the patio is full, the atmosphere makes up for the cuisine and Mak’s Food becomes a place you might even remember. To give the eatery its due, the prices don’t exactly scream gourmet.
The mixed spring rolls might resemble a microwave dinner, visually speaking, but they go down easy enough. Meanwhile, the egg-fried rice shows up embarrassed by its lack of egg, but who’s complaining when it’s liberally doused in a sweet and sour prawn sauce – it all looks the same under a blanket of gelatinous red, anyhow.
You don’t leave Mak’s Food feeling particularly healthy, but with the right crowd, you’ll probably leave feeling content. Not the sort of restaurant you’d go out of your way to visit, but if you happen across it after an afternoon of shopping for Karama knick-knacks you could do far worse.
