From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009

The portion sizes at Ming Palace are ridiculous. Cauldrons of stew and plates stacked with mountains of thick, trunk-like spring rolls will fill your table if you order a mere starter, main and vegetable side dish.

Portions aside, the food is different, the kind of different that makes you confident you’ve escaped the usual trappings of eating a foreign cuisine. The staples of spring rolls and dumplings are made reassuringly unfamiliar, but unfortunately, the enjoyment is marred by the fact everything is slick with oil.

A highlight is the beef in chilli oil. Surprisingly, it’s a dish that’s not actually swamped in the greasy liquid, but is more of a stew, and it’s positively delicious. Slightly less successful is the Beijing duck, with dry, mealy meat, though the restaurant has billed it as its special.

While Ming Palace, for sure, has its misses, we remain hopeful about the venue. There is so much flavour buried deep inside the dishes, we suspect all it may take to get at the food’s nuances is a request for less oil.

The environment is not bad, quite nice for dinner, about food, no turning back again. Just disappointed.
