Shang Palace
Pricey Chinese at the Shangri-La 1 Reviews

From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
Crisp royal reds with splashes of gold and brown speak of some secluded Shanghai rendezvous, not a plush hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road. Indeed, dining at Shang Palace is a regal affair – until you peer over the balcony to the bustling lobby below.
The restaurant has basically been crowbarred into a corner of the hotel, but to its credit, it pulls it off well, and the service is quick enough that you have little time to gaze around. The test of any Chinese restaurant is always the Beijing duck.
Here, they carve the meat instead of shredding it, and it seems to work. The neatly-cut, tender slices of moist bird, easily smothered in layers of spring onion and rich plum sauce.
It is the stand-out dish in a menu of staples, which hardly sets the world on fire, but offers a solid selection of favourites that rely on pleasing the customer rather than dazzling them. Shang Palace knows its audience, and while dishes can sometimes fall into the ‘too dry’ or ‘too gloopy’ trap, the overall experience is good enough to satisfy those who don’t want to look too hard.
