From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
If you can see beyond the shopping centre pandemonium, Finz is actually quite a find. This Mediterranean seafood eatery does its best with subdued lighting and intimate tables a deux to fence itself off from the madness outside, or if you’ve got children-shaped madess with you, it’s great for families, too.
Much of the menu – at least on the fishy side – is excellent and great value. The creamy lobster ravioli and abalone spring rolls with ‘pommes granite’ dressing (they mean pomegranate, if you’re curious, are both superb, and the seafood espatada – a rather dangerous-looking spear of succulent John Dory fillet, calamari, mussels and prawn tails, accompanied by rice and an irresistible bowl of lemon butter, is perfection itself.
But there are a few moments – particularly when you venture away from the water and onto land – where Finz allows itself to slip into shopping mall mediocrity. Steer well clear of the tough-as-old-boots bread basket, the watery coffee and tame sandwich selection and avoid the chewy behemoth of a fillet steak at all costs.
But stick around for pudding – the melt-in-the-mouth chocolate fondant redeems all Finz’ faults in one fell swoop.
