Russian Home Restaurant
Traditional Russian restaurant Oud Metha 1 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
As the name suggests, this restaurant serves homely Russian food, in homely Russian portions, to homely Russian folk.
Authentic tastes on offer include kvass, a tangy and sharp drink made from fermented black bread, or the candy-floss-coloured fruity compote. Although herring is usually served as a nibble with vodka, the version here is excellent on its own.
Meaty and tart, it is layered with traditional accompaniments of beetroot, boiled potato, carrot and hard-boiled eggs. Golubsty is another classic Russian home-style dish – a filling of beef and rice is wrapped in cabbage and steamed, served in a rich tomato sauce.
Mayonnaise features heavily in the beef à la France, a fillet of beef slathered in cheese and onions, and served on a bed of mash – not for the thin or the faint of heart, but delicious and filling.
A simpler dish is the home-style hamburger, which is served with buckwheat kasha. An extremely satisfying experience.
