From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
There’s no doubt that Suvoroff is one of the strangest restaurant concepts to hit Dubai in a long time. It’s a budget Russian spot that serves high-concept fare.
As you stroll in, you will immediately be accosted by the steely gaze of a large, stuffed bear, and quickly realise that this it isn’t going to be a traditional meal out. The menu offers a few more surprises. Sure, there are some classics: starters of borscht and potato pelmeshki (small dumplings, but the standard stuffed cabbage is, surprisingly, nowhere to be found.
The dishes are a bit hit and miss and, considering the chef is so keen to challenge him/herself with some complicated dishes, it seems they need a bit more practise.
Generally, the flavours are good, but the textures too chewy and dry. The food may not always be spot-on, but, for the price, it isn’t bad either, and there is a feeling that the staff care about what they put on the plate.
Though there is some room for improvement, the fact remains that the venue is a welcome change to the otherwise characterless haunts that threaten to blight JBR’s food scene.
