From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
Hunkered down on the ground floor of the Hyatt Regency, Miyako has long been a Time Out favourite, and this year it shows no signs of losing its appeal. Decked out in natural stone and rice paper gliding doors, and humming with devotees until the wee hours, this intimate Japanese institution is, without doubt, the genuine article.
The exhaustive menu is filled with a constellation of authentic specialties not offered in many other Dubai restaurants. A standout among the starters, the tasty chilled spinach, comes in a tower, basking in tempura-style sauce.
The deep-fried eggplant provides contrast; slathered with a glut of miso paste, it dissolves on the tongue in a delightful blur. But Miyako made its name in the sushi arts; a key difference being the quality of the produce.
The rainbow roll, a six-piece circle of tuna, salmon and hammour wrapped over coils of barbecued eel, jumps with texture and taste. The super-fresh ingredients in the vegetarian sushi sparkle with flavour, and come wrapped in a carpet of melt-in-your mouth rice. Even with the Deira traffic, this remains a winner.
