From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
Momotaro is too bright for a fine-dining establishment, the decor too minimal. But the menu belies haute ambitions. Voss is the only available bottled water, and strange sushi combinations include items like duck and foie gras.
The sushi pieces are huge, making them difficult to manage, the rice holding everything together is clumpy and the dry, razor-thin slices of peach add nothing to the incoherent combo of ingredients inside. In homage to Nobu, Momotaro has its own miso black cod special. The lamb version is over chewy.
It is when the chef drops his haughty pretences that things improve. The seafood gyoza has a tender interior underneath a thin dumpling wrapping. The okra tempura is light, and achieves a nice balance between the crispy batter and the soft vegetable underneath.
An order of green tea crème brûlée is successful – probably because it isn’t trying too hard to be different. The problem with Momotaro is that it hasn’t figured out its market. It’s trying too hard to appeal to foodies, and to match the likes of Nobu.
If it accepts what it’s good at: basic, non-flouncy, Japanese fare, it might stand a chance of warming the hearts of the less fussy shoppers at the Souk Al Bahar.
