Sakura
Japanese food in the Taj Palace hotel 7 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
The interior at Sakura – minimalist design and comfy furniture – serves as a welcome relief to the traffic in downtown Deira.
The food, too, is lovingly prepared and beautifully presented. Sushi and sashimi dishes are made in front of you by a deftly skilled chef and the miso soup starters are as you’d expect – rich, flavoursome, and reasonably sized too.
Main courses are delicious, if a little uninspired should you stray from the sushi. Tempura ‘everything’ is the order of the day, but they are excellent and worth the visit. Side orders are more curious. The yakisoba with shrimp fails to reveal any form of marine life, despite repeated probing.
The kani kara (deep-fried soft-shelled crab, doused in gentle vinaigrette, is great and the seafood yaki soba (fried buckwheat noodles) is filling and tasty. As with many Asian restaurants, dessert can be a disappointment.
The ‘exotic fruit platter’ is anything but exotic (think Port Rashid rather than Palm Jumeirah) and service can be erratic. That said, it’s still a reasonable bet if you are in the neighbourhood and fancy a healthy (ish) bite to eat.
