That it’s easy to miss is probably down to its size – there’s barely room to swing a cat, let alone pile in with a big bunch of friends. But if you want an unfussy meal that gets straight to the point, you’re in business.
We’re fans of the asari miso shiru – soy bean soup with clams – for starters. The addition of seafood is a great alternative to the usual miso soup formula. You’ll want to sample the sushi dishes, as they hit all the right notes.
The salmon avocado sushi, for example, is a no-frills affair, but bursting with freshness and flavour. Tempting as it is to fill up on raw fish, leave room for a grilled platter. They’re only small, but the cod grilled in miso is one of the best things we’ve tasted in a long time.
Get your dining partner to order the baked seabass, which is similarly excellent. You get the feeling desserts are more of an afterthought. If you want anything more adventurous than green tea ice cream, you’ll have to order from nearby Peppercrab’s menu – though the obliging staff will happily run and fetch it for you.
