From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009

Although the inside setting is a little more unassuming than the swish whooshing-wave exterior of Jumeirah Beach Hotel would have you believe, Beachcombers’ cuisine – a fusion of Indian, Thai, Malaysian and Japanese – can only be described as top quality.

From delicious dim sum, crispy prawn crackers and succulent spring rolls, to steaming bowls of piquant curries and fantastic veggie noodles, the grub is excellent. The roti prata, prepared fresh at a live cooking stand, is possibly one of the best in town, as is the dessert table, laden with all the usual waist-expanding suspects.

This is a great spot for a family brunch on both Fridays and Saturdays, with an extremely reasonable kids’ buffet for Dhs35. Inside, there’s a staffed games room complete with PlayStations, while entertainers and a live band will keep the rest amused. Outside deck dining offers panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf and the Burj Al Arab. What more do you want?

A bit of a bugbear, this. Beachcombers has, in my opinion, one of the best views in Dubai and the food is consistently good. My one complaint is the family-friendly aspect. We have taken our two children, aged 6 and 2, three times now and been less than impressed with the quality of child-friendly facilities on offer. The first time, we had to wait 45 minutes for someone to come and supervise the children's area, the second time there was a bored-looking staff member watching DVDs while unruly other children caused havoc with the video games (which didn't work) and the third time a surly eighteen -year-old sat immobile after we complained that the children's room was unsupervised.
We complained the first time and received an apology in the post. The second and third times we just felt that things would never get better - and we will not return. It is truly a shame, as a visit to Beachcombers has the ability to offer guests the 'wow' factor in spades.
We now go (when finances permit) to the Movenpick - so much more child-friendly and the food is also excellent value.
