Billy Blues

Great steak + relaxed surroundings = a content Time Out Reviews

From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009

Let’s face it, if you want fine dining you don’t go to a restaurant with pool tables. Similarly, if a big group of mates wants a lively night out you don’t go to a restaurant that serves sorbet between courses. Can you guess which sort of restaurant American bar and grill Billy Blues falls in?

The high thrills/low frills ethos behind Billy Blues means it will always cater to groups rather than gourmets, but the food is surprisingly decent. The menu offers few surprises, with chunky shrimp gumbo and gooey racks of ribs being the only stand out classics. Otherwise, the slabs of Porterhouse steak, range of burgers and seafood grills or platters are similar to a dozen other similar restaurants.

That fact that tables are often crammed suggests that Billy Blues does the basics better than most. If you’re the sort of diner that orders barbecue baby back ribs to soak up jugs full of cocktail you can’t go far wrong in this Satwa steakhouse. It’s a lesson the more celebrated steakhouses would do well to learn.

Billy Blues has not changed at all in ten years, save for the removal of the carpet of peanut shells on the floor, which I never understood, and the introduction of a no-smoking policy, which I do not understand.

However, while Billy has dug in his heels, the rest of Dubai has coursed ahead, and the crowds with it. A Thursday night in Dubai without a visit to Billy Blues used to be unheard of. No no one has heard of Billy Blues full stop.

Frankly, that's brilliant - now you can get a table in this venerable Old Dubai institution with ease - and the food has not lost its flavour. The ribs are not the best in Dubai - bizarrely that honour goes to Rattlesnack, a place now best avoided for other reasons - but they are still good, and on Mondays, half price.

More to the point Billy Blues is not really about the food. It's just comfortable. Like a broken in old shoe, some things you should refuse to give up.

Besides, if you don't fancy the menu, you can always order from next door - Cactus Cantina.
