Entrecote Café de Paris
Ultra-simple steakhouse with surprising menu twist 1 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
By their very nature, gimmicks tend to go out of date fairly quickly. But the gimmick at the Entrecote de Paris, that it has only one thing on the menu – steak in the ‘famous’ entrecote sauce – has had surprising longevity. The recipe was stumbled upon by Madame Boubier in 1930 and the secret of the sauce has been passed on to a narrow cabal of trusted chefs (and the odd Middle Eastern franchise).
Found on the ground floor of the ageing Khaleej Palace Hotel, Entrecote Café de Paris successfully tries to instill some Gallic charm, with dark wood paneling, turn of the 20th Century wall sketchings and waitresses dressed like French maids. The menu is simplicity itself, one dish prepared the way you like it. With chips. And no starters. Thankfully the sauce is pretty good and the cuts nicely tender.
While we wouldn’t recommend Entrecote to vegetarians, those with a sweet tooth may want to accompany their carnivorous partners just to sample the restaurant’s excellent dessert menu, the highlight of which is a stunning soufflé that oozes thick chocolate sauce. Equally as impressive is the Entrecote’s wine list; you can treat yourself to a very nice glass of Bordeaux for just Dhs19.
The café may be a one trick pony, but if you’re a steak fan it’s a trick well worth returning for.
