From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
Flavourless steaks spoil what is an otherwise worthwhile visit to this classy South African joint. Some particularly well-chosen lighting means a warm orange glow permeates the restaurant, making it the sort of place you immediately want to settle in for a long night.
Waiters are keen to banter, which gives the grand surroundings a relaxed edge. Another benefit of the service is the laughter derived when some poor sap comes in for a quiet birthday meal and gets a very loud tableside South African sing song (though they opt for ‘Shosholoza’, happily, rather than ‘Happy Birthday’complete with fervent thigh beating and African drums.
Continuing the South African theme, traditional dishes among the starters make for a distinctive dining experience – try the bobotie, a meaty treat with sweet shards of lamb shank and, bizarrely, a serving of banana curry ice cream that actually works very well (really, try it). But move onto the mains and it’s a far more generic affair, all chicken, burgers and ribs.
You can choose from South African and Australian steaks – we went for the recommended wagyu, which was standard, teetering on bland. It’s a nice touch to get a Werther’s Original at the end instead of a mint, though.
