Tony Roma’s
Big portions of US grub Sheikh Zayed Road 2 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
Tony Roma’s has always impressed us with its sleek, minimalist decor (compared with the gaudiness of other American budget-end steakhouses, featuring framed black and white prints and dark wood furniture.
We have also been appreciative of the swift service and reasonably sized portions (again, when compared to the mounds of food served at other Stateside eateries). So, we were surprised when, recently, we noticed a big (pun very much intended) change. Sure, the stylish photos still adorn the bare-brick walls and the quick-smart service continues to render grumbly tums silent within nanoseconds of ordering starters.
It appears, however, that the portion sizes have expanded to proportions that even Homer Simpson would have trouble putting away. The spinach and artichoke dip starter, for example, takes up half the table with its overly generous serving of the aforementioned, ringed by topographic peaks of spiky tortilla chips. It’s delicious, but make sure you have someone to share it with. The mains are equally generous, though less impressive. The steaks are cooked to order, and the grilled seafood passes muster. The side dishes, such as the powdery baked potatoes or the peculiarly bitter veggies, are a disappointment.
The desserts are sickly sweet, but you’ll be able to keep your dentist in business with the apple crisp or skillet cookie sundae. It’s a shame really that quantity has superceded quality, because Tony Roma’s used to be a great family (and wallet-friendly) steakhouse.
