Bongo Stop has made its mark on the city’s culinary map in a short time. The menu is a humble one-page affair, containing Indian staples as well as north-east African offerings. Should you eschew the naans and paneers, opt for ndizi choma, lightly fried plantains which, despite lacking punch, are miraculously crisp and oil-free.
For mains, the chicken pili pili is a war zone of heat, with armies of spices battling for dominance. Palate pacifists should go for the porridge-like ugali, or the mishkaki, with beef morsels so tender you’ll feel as though your teeth are on a spa retreat.
The standout dish, though, has to be the house specialty, kuka paka (a little like an African korma) which announces itself with aromatic bellows of cinnamon and coconut. Be warned, though: many of the East African specialities, including kuka paka, need to be ordered in advance.
