Samari

North African favourite on Al Mina Road Reviews

From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009

Get past the perpetually furious waitress and relentless medley of Moroccan pop and blaring Fashion TV, and you just might like Samari’s buzzing café atmosphere. The place is pretty worn around the edges and a bit grubby, but is very popular with locals.

A consistent haze of shisha is to be expected. But the food is a bit of a letdown; logic says that a place as colourfully local as this would serve up first-rate grub, but then the logic of serving everything from tuna nicoise to lasagne in a clearly Moroccan place escapes us.

But even the staples of the cuisine are disappointing: the unappetising appearance of the lamb tagine isn’t helped by a handful of soggy prunes and cheap-tasting meat. Fatty and almost tasteless, this off-the-bone shank stew possesses neither the heartiness of Moroccan food, nor its own distinct character.

Despite the shab, Samari is comfortable and there’s something to be said for the tasteful restraint in ‘Moroccanising’ the place. But you’re never likely to randomly end up in the abyss that is Al Mina Street, and this café isn’t worth going out of your way for.

I have visited this place several times and am familiar with authentic Moroccan cuisine, and the food is authentic and fresh. Aside from the amazingly delicious food (and hot bread!), the service is extremely superb. The owner is friendly and knowledgeable about the food, and makes a deliberate effort to make all patrons feel comfortable and satisfied.

Also an additional note - The TimeOut Dubai staff writer's note above is inaccurate and baseless - this place is perfection! I am based in NY, & this is probably the first place I'll visit when I come back to Dubai.

My wife and I have been to Dubai several times, and make it a point to stop in Samari each time we go. We were gently introduced to the Hooka here, which was fun. The owners are a Wonderful couple, who take the time to talk to you, and even sit with you at your table, and give valuable information about the area if you want. The wait staff is superb, with everyone helping each other out to make sure you are never wanting for anything. The food is superb. They take pride in purchasing the best available meats, vegetables, spices, breads, etc. Its amazing how inexpensive the dishes are, based on the quality of food you receive. There are indoor, and outdoor seating areas available from couches, to tables, so you can relax in whatever arrangement you prefer. We always like the couch after long travels from the US. Its a cozy place, with great food and even better people. Take the time to talk to the staff or the owners, and open your mind to new parts of the world!
