Levantine
Time Out checks out Atlantis' pricey Arabic offering 9 Reviews
From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2009
The miserable-looking Russian hostesses and the second-rate Phantom Of The Opera-esque decor – think a long winding staircase and chintzy crimson curtains – may tell you otherwise, but Levantine is a strictly Lebanese affair.
The service is pushy – the waiter seems intent on you ordering wine and extra, tasty but pricey mezze dishes. The overpriced theme continues throughout the menu: while an order of shish taouk would set you back maybe Dhs30 max at any Diyafah Street hole-in-the-the wall, here it is an inexplicable Dhs105.
There certainly isn’t anything exceptional about the dish to warrant those 90 extra dirhams (the morsels of chicken are, in fact, tougher than other versions. The elephantine crustaceans that come in the order of grilled prawns nearly justify the cost, though the dish is wildly inconsistent; some prawns are tender and smoky, others tough and without flavour.
The desserts aren’t good enough to warrant the extra calories or dirhams. To distract you from your mediocre meal the lights dim and ‘the amazing Svetlana’ belly dances by your table. This, along with the opportunity to say, ‘I dined in the Atlantis last night’, we suppose, is what justifies the minimum spend of Dhs180 per person on standard Lebanese fare.
