Long’s Bar

From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2007
Long’s is one of those places ruddy-faced aged expats refer to, with a crinkly grin, as being a ‘Dubai institution’. Certainly, some of the punters here could do with being removed to a facility of some sort, yet the grub on offer is far from institutionalised slop; rather, this venerable hang-out has upped the quality control and is currently serving some decent fare. Based around a looped wooden bar (the longest in the UAE, allegedly) this subterranean venue at the Towers Rotana is a fairly authentic evocation of the traditional spit’n’sawdust British pub.
There’s lightweight background music and frequent live troubadours, as well as plenty of TVs screening football matches. Away from the bar is a cosy eating area, replete with dark wood and brickwork and colonial-era sepia prints. Special mention must be made of the Long’s kebab platter, a truly bizarre affair which sees a strange wooden platter-cum-iron grid host a selection of kebabs, ranging from a toothsome chicken shish to a slightly tough strip of marinated salmon, swinging gently over a mound of fries and steamed vegetables. Or there’s some rather tasty business happening with the calamari fritti that comes alive with a drizzle of lemon and some black pepper. Think generous portions with a healthful bent – there are plenty of salads and vegetables.
