On one side of this vast café-complex, there’s a greenhouse-like territory full of lush plantation, a vegetative quantum leap away from the world outside, and considerably cooler too. AGCs central district is less exciting, with a gloomy purple ceiling like the moments before a thunderstorm, and a rim that creates an electric-blue horizon. In the background is the ceaseless sound of water dripping, while in the foreground our meteorologically confused hosts taunt customers with lowbrow ballad-pap, Disney-style duets quite unsuited to the rainforest.
The chairs are incredibly comfortable, reclining at such an angle that hours vanish like pennies lost under a bed. However, AGC is a bit too theme park, too artificial for comfort. And its size is daunting – a bowling alley could be installed in here and there would still be plenty of space left over.
On our visit, the service was very slow; replacement charcoal took aeons to arrive and the staff needed prompting before returning the change. The strawberry juice was delicious, but my mushroom and asparagus salad was nothing special. The AGC does what it says on the tin – plants and lots of sweet smelling shisha smoke – but there are better places in town to get your hookah fix
