So romantic is this restaurant that any proposals of marriage have to be whispered in case a neighbouring table hears and jumps in with a resounding ‘yes’ of their own. Hanging over the water in a secluded bay that can be reached by golf buggy or boat, it is one of our all-time Dubai favourites. The Valentine menu looks to up the ante with imaginative dishes such as foie gras strawberry and rhubarb confit and lobster ravioli. Dhs480. 7-11pm.
Swooning, dizziness and a shortness of breath will accompany Valentine’s Day dinner at Dubai’s highest restaurant. We don’t want to make this about the
money, but times are hard and not everybody has a spare Dhs400,000 to spend on a Valentine’s Day dinner. So a Dhs350 set price for a couple to dine and enjoy house beverages under the stars in a pretty Dubai hotel is one of the best deals we’ve seen in the city this year. Dhs350. 7pm-11pm.
The new Marriott Hotel Al Jaddaf looks, from the distance, like a fairly isolated destination, standing out on its own in a landscape of sand and highway. Despite that, within the hotel you’ll find the rather bright, spacious and attractive Merletto restaurant, which has a Venetian Italian concept. The menu offers a mixture of ‘cicchetti’ (the Venetian answer to bar snacks or tapas) and Italian classics such as pizza, pasta and mains. Starters appear attractively presented, such as a sliver-sized-slice of melanzane parmigiana – a lovely little dish of thinly and finely layered soft aubergine, plenty of cheese and sharply tangy tomato. Main courses, however, are less refined, in terms of both appearance and execution. Merletto is a pleasant, and accessible Italian venture. It is not, however, exciting enough to make it a must-try destination in its own right.
Even by Dubai standards, the Palazzo Versace on the banks of the Creek is a little bit fancy. With Donatella Versace as the artistic director, it was always going to fall at the opulent end of the style spectrum, and Valentine’s Day seems the ideal occasion to marvel at the magnificent surroundings. A five-course set menu and bubbly will help you shake off the feeling you are in a grand Italian museum. Dhs1,950. From 7pm.
