New York’s Tribeca neighbourhood is known to be stylish and trendy and attracts a young, hip and wealthy crowd. So with the opening of Tribeca Kitchen & Bar in Dubai’s Ocean View Hotel, JBR, it seems that the emirate is the ideal spot to emulate such a scene.
Designed with the same industrial and urban feel that bars and buildings in New York are known for, Dubai’s Tribeca is an attractive addition to the JBR neighbourhood. The spacious venue is loaded with quirky, custom-made pieces of furniture created from recycled materials such as old crates and steel piping. Even the lights are made from old bottles of grape. Artworks and images of classic Americana objects catch the eye on entering the bar and the exposed brick walls pop with vibrant graffiti by local and international street artists Justone and Onemizer, adding to the urban, loft-style vibe.
In one corner, guests can recline on the soft sofas made from old, distressed leather, which add a certain character and charm to the venue. Other areas are ideal for groups of friends – crowd around one of the high-top tables built like an island breakfast bar or huddle together on a wooden picnic-inspired bench for a more intimate conversation. The design and layout is executed well here – the bar is both spacious enough to hold a large crowd and yet cosy enough to be relaxed and unpretentious. The owners have clearly tried to reflect the charm of New York’s Tribeca district by adding a huge mural of the city’s iconic yellow taxis, street signs pointing to the famous Canal Street and the Robert Di Niro quote ‘You Talking To Me?’ from the 1976 movie Taxi Driver printed across a canvas. Such small touches add authenticity to the bar, as do the make-shift DJ booth made from old pallets, and the coffee tables designed from vintage suitcases.
Special organic beverage options are a unique selling point here, and staff are warm and friendly when serving them. There is a no-nonsense attitude about the venue – don’t expect private VIP tables. It’s this easy-going and friendly attitude that makes Tribeca work so well. The staff have personality and are willing to treat all of their customers like VIPs without the hefty price tag that usually goes with it.
