Dubai has a steady appetite for organic foods and other natural, chemical-free products such as laundry detergent and toiletries. But you don’t have to wait until the weekend to raid the likes of the city’s pop-ups, such as Ripe Market. Organic Foods & Café may be the better-known name when it comes to doing your pesticide-conscious stocking up at supermarkets, but spare a shop for BiOrganic in TECOM.
There’s a lot to love about the store and café, which sits diagonally across from the Saudi German Hospital at the Hessa Street junction. It’s quiet, spacious and offers a number of products you won’t find in its similarly sized rivals – one of our favourite new finds is the store’s Quest protein chips (guilt-free crisps. YOU’RE WELCOME). Even better, however, is the weekend store-wide discount. Shop on a Friday or Saturday and get 15 percent off your total bill. What better day for a supermarket sweep?
Make the most of it by filling your trolley with fresh breads from the bakery (many made using healthy grains such as spelt and rye), organic meats from the butcher’s counter (camel meat is available if you order in advance), fresh fruit and vegetables from the colourful central display, and tinned groceries including organic, sustainable seafood from foods company Fish 4 Ever (learn more about the firm’s ethos by following them on Twitter via @fish4ever). If you’re going to go wild in the aisles, there aren’t many healthier places to do it.
