It’s not often you’ll hear Dubai’s animal lovers raving about a pet shop – many people would be happy to see the trade in pure-bred puppies and kittens ended for good. But there are a couple of stores in Dubai bucking the trend, that instead of perpetuating the cruel sale of posh pets are offering a lifeline to the city’s hundreds of rescued animals. Wonder Pets is one such shop.
Based in Jumeirah Village Circle, alongside the usual array of food and accessories, you’ll find a line-up of cats, dogs, birds and rabbits all in need of a loving home, but none of them are for sale. Each animal was previously abandoned or stray and has been taken in by the store, which also takes care of any emergency treatment and vaccinations. When potential owners come in looking to add to their family, they’re only asked to pay for the animal’s costs, which is Dhs1,050, including veterinary care and board.
Sadly, some of the animals rehomed have been dumped right outside by former pet owners who’ve heard of its benevolence. Fortunately, it’s becoming just as well known by the right people as the wrong ones.
