Julia Child famously mused in the ’50s, “it’s so beautifully arranged on the plate – you know someone’s fingers have been all over it”. Although the legendary American chef never quite made it to Market & Platters – the food haven in Dubai Marina – she knew exactly what would be trending for decades to come.
Nestled in Pinnacle Tower, this artisan market is a food-lover’s dream come to life. The grocer stocks everything from fresh vegetables raw and cooked seafood, halal meats and cheeses from around the world. The ethos of the boutique brand is to assist the diverse palates of Dubai and play an important role in the Middle Eastern culture of sharing meals.
Aside from stacking its shelves with authentic products from places as far flung as Peru and Ethiopia, Market & Platters specialises in plating up sushi, sashimi and shellfish for the emirate’s famous boat parties. So on point is the brand that it even names its plates to cater to its audience – Jumeirah Platter and Marina Platter being just two, with the latter the more posh and expensive option.
One of its biggest-selling seafood items is the samphire. For those who aren’t in the know, samphire is a sea vegetable that grows abundantly on shorelines, packed full of vitamins and iodine. “Those who visit us frequently will know that we are crazy about samphire, and there are very few places in Dubai where you can get a good example of it,” says Ali Serha, owner of the store. “It embodies the magic of summer days.”
