For 14 years there has been a phenomenon in Dubai where everything goes crazy for a month. Well-known and respected stores crazily slash their prices, normal Dubaians going about their business drop everything and run for the malls, foaming at the mouths, people dress in costumes and dance in the streets, bending themselves into odd shapes and making animals out of balloons. This annual spell of madness is known as the Dubai Shopping Festival.
Now in its 15th year, Dubai Shopping Festival is running from January 28 until February 28, and this year it’s going crazier than ever. With more than 6,000 retail outlets across 40 malls offering discounts of up to 80 per cent or special offers, now is the perfect time to kit out your home, buy that designer handbag you’ve been hankering after or fill out your wardrobe with those invaluable staple items. It’s not all about shopping, though. Snow Patrol, Nickelback, Monster Trucks, countless street acts and crazy bike stunts will entertain you, along with loads of other stuff and the obligatory nightly fireworks.
Last year, 3.35 million shoppers headed for the malls (and spent a tidy Dhs9.8billion), which no doubt caused major traffic and parking problems. This year there are no such worries thanks to the Dubai Metro. The rest of the stops are due to open in February, meaning you can do our metro shop hop with ease.
