The hair expert
Maria Dowling has become a celebrity in her own right, thanks to her skills with shades, tones and all things colour.
1 ‘For a great temporary root cover use make-up. Blondes should use face powder, redheads bronzer, and brunettes brown eye shadow. Simply dust it on with a blusher brush.’ 2 ‘If your hair lacks body and looks lifeless, spray on a little hairspray while blasting with a hairdryer to create movement.’ 3 ‘Blondes should beware of chlorine in swimming pools as it can turn hair green. If this does happen, simply work tomato ketchup through the hair, leave for five minutes and rinse out with your usual shampoo.’ 4 ‘Sleep on a silk pillowcase to prevent static and frizz as it's softer and gentler than cotton. It will also keep your blow-dry looking better for a few days.’ 5 ‘If you’re suffering from root re-growth and it’s driving you bonkers, part the hair in a zig zag line and watch the root problem look 90 per cent less harsh.’ 6 ‘Whatever your hair colour, make hair glow by rinsing with chamomile tea. Pop a teabag into warm water, let in infuse and use as a final rinse after shampooing. This is also a great hair brightener for people who have no hair colourant in their hair.’ 7 ‘If you don't have time to shampoo, dilute rose water with still bottled water in a spray bottle and spritz onto your hair to keep it smelling lovely and looking fresh. This is also a great hair freshener when you're lounging poolside or on the beach.’ Mariadowling, Nr Capitol Hotel, Al Mina Road, Satwa (04 345 4225)
The nail expert
Mariette Beekman, the nail educator at BioSculpture Middle East knows everything about terrific talons
8 ‘Be sure to apply only top quality products that are 3-Free (Formaldehyde,Toluene,DBP). These ingredients are bad for your nails, and also your general health.’ 9 ‘For stronger nails, file them square. Round nails tend to crack from the sides because they are weaker.’ 10 ‘Increase your protein intake. Your nails will grow faster and become much stronger.’ 11 ‘To help normal manicures last, use gloves when cleaning and doing dishes, and re-apply top coat every day to prevent chipping. Also use cuticle oil every day to keep nails looking hydrated and, before you apply polish, always make sure your nails are properly cleaned, with no traces of oil left on them.’ Try Bio Sculpture permanent manicures at The Nail Spa, The Dubai Mall (04 339 9078) or learn how to do them with Mariette at the Bio Sculpture Gel Middle East training centre in Al Barsha (04 341 4820)
The skin expert
Mona Mirza, medical aesthetician and founder of Biolite Skin Clinic, dishes her all-natural secrets
12 ‘Apply nappy rash cream to your spots; the titanium and zinc oxide in it will help to calm the inflammation.’ 13 ‘Rub the fleshy part of a lemon (having first squeezed out the juice) on the darkest areas of your skin to lighten them.’ 14 ‘Applying the juice of fresh ginger to any area where you have lost pigment after a burn will help speed up melanin production.’ 15 ‘Soak a handful of fenugreek seeds overnight and grind them into a paste before applying to a damp scalp as a mask – making sure to get to your scalp rather than just applying it to your hair. Leave the paste in for a few hours. This is great as a hair-loss prevention treatment, plus it also makes your hair extra shiny.’ Biolite Skin Clinic, Dubai Healthcare City (04 375 2122)
The make-up expert
Eliano Bou Assi, the training manager at Bobbi Brown Middle East reveals his top tips for a perfect finish
16 ‘To help you determine the ratio of oil to water in a moisturising product, apply it to the skin; if the skin under the moisturiser is warm, there is greater percentage of oil in the product. If the skin is cool, there is a greater percentage of water. The science behind this is that evaporation cools, and water evaporates. Oil does not evaporate and therefore traps heat in the body.’ 17 ‘To see the true effect of a foundation, let it settle for a few minutes and then blend or layer more in spots where it’s needed.’ 18 ‘Having trouble with blusher streaks? Your foundation probably wasn’t powdered, or you’ve used too much moisturiser under the foundation.’ 19 ‘A miracle solution for dry or chapped lips: add a dab of Bobbi Brown’s Hydrating Eye Cream (Dhs184) to them before following with lip balm, then your lip colour.’
And one from Bobbi Brown herself...
20 ‘Reach for concealer first. A good concealer can make the most immediate and dramatic difference to how you look. It lightens up dark circles, brightens your face, and makes you look well rested. Look for a creamy formula that’s yellow-based and one shade lighter than your skin tone.’ Bobbi Brown, The Dubai Mall (04 330 8151)
