You hadn't forgotten had you? It's Mothers' Day on Sunday so get yourself to the shops…
Bouquet garni You can’t go wrong with treating your mum to a new spritz – particularly if it comes from British perfumer Jo Malone. We love its new sweet lime and cedar scent. The scent was inspired by the creative arts and cuisine of Thailand. The mix also includes top notes of passion fruit and pomelo, middle notes of lavender and coconut and base notes of tamarind, and amber – so there’s no need to worry about your mother smelling like a spicy green curry. Prices start at Dhs195 for 30ml. Available at Jo Malone (04 339 9807), The Dubai Mall
Wrapping it up Scarves and wraps are always a hit with mums – whether it’s a cheap pashmina from your local souk (a great credit crunch option) or a designer piece that she can show off to all her friends. If you really want to spoil your mum – and you have the dirhams to do it – we’re betting she’d love one of these botanically inspired silk Asprey numbers (Dhs1,100) with their fantastical underwater scenes or the more demure flower and seed motifs. Available at Asprey (04 341 0641), Mall of the Emirates
Crazy plates While it’s true that mums revolted against irons and vacuum cleaners as suitable Mother’s Day gifts long ago, it’s still OK to buy her lovely things for the home – as long as it has nothing to do with scrubbing the bathroom grouting with a toothbrush. If she’s into entertaining and likes things vibrant, you can’t go wrong with a piece or seven from the Santa Barbara range from French home store Genevieve Lethu. Just make sure you offer to do the washing up. Genevieve Lethu is at Mercato Mall (04 344 8810) and Wafi City (04 324 5546)
It’s in the bag You’re always onto a winner when you buy a lady (your mum included) a handbag – well, depending on how well you do in the style stakes that is. It’s time to forget the oversized totes with all that heavy hardware and too many showy pockets. A nice little clutch is a good way to go, and the classic hobo is also a great option. You can’t go far wrong with the Vicky Line by Le Tanneur. They come in a range of colours, from earthy tones to shiny brights. For us, the hot pink and floral versions take the cake. Available at Tagz, Dubai Festival City (04 232 6097)
Casual cool There’s nothing like a figure-flattering frock to make your mum look all aglow. We love this halter-neck dress from the latest beachwear collection from the shop women’secret. The big splashy palm print ticks all the right fashion boxes as well as helps to smooth over any cuddly bits. The wrap at the waist shows off a woman’s smallest point and the neckline broadens the shoulders and elongates the neck. And at only Dhs125 we’re thoroughly enamoured with the price too. Women’secret can be found at The Dubai Mall (04 434 3177), Deira City Centre (04 295 9665), BurJuman (04 359 9447), Lamcy Plaza (04 335 7791) and Dubai Festival City (04 232 6167)
Pop of colour We know that it’s not always the best idea to buy make up for someone else, but if you know what your mum likes, a replacement lipstick or mascara can be a welcome gift. If you’re not sure what tickles her fancy, you’re unlikely to put a step wrong with this Bobbi Brights Eye Palette (Dhs330). With 35 different colours there’s sure to be loads your mum will love. And the other shades (such as the slightly crazy blue denim), are sure to come in useful the next time she’s invited to an ’80s revival party. Available at The Bobbi Brown Studio (04 330 8151), The Dubai Mall
Pinning down a date for Mother’s Day each year can be challenging: there are so many wacky rules and it varies – sometimes radically – between countries. In the UAE, it’s celebrated on the March equinox (March 21) while in the UK and Ireland they shower mothers with gifts on the fourth Sunday of Lent – this year it’s 22 March (get thee to Amazon post haste!). So for our international community, here are a handful of the other dates for your diary. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
May 3: Spain, Hungary, Portugal
May 10: Australia, Brazil, USA, India, Pakistan, Philippines, South Africa, New Zealand
May 31: France, Morocco
June 28: Kenya
November 29: Russia

Usefull article, but still confusing about the date. The headline says it's mothers day on sunday which is the 22nd MArch. However at the end of the article you say its the equinox which is the 21st March(saturday).
