There’s no doubt that, right now, the weather is pretty good: cooler days, blue skies and just a hint of evening chill in the air (we’ll ignore the recent freak rainstorms). We’re looking forward to spending more of our weekends outside as winter sets in. But where to start? If you want to try something new, check out the inaugural Outdoor Adventure Dubai show, an exhibition dedicated entirely to the world of outside entertainment.

Held at Dubai World Trade Centre’s The Plaza – a new state-of-the-art outdoor exhibition area – from December 17 to 19, it promises to provide plenty of pre-Christmas fun for the adventurous. With a huge array of equipment and hands-on demonstrations in diving, climbing, paragliding, archery, amateur flying and more, plus info on planning action-focused holidays, there should be lots here to keep even the most avid adrenaline junkies happy.

With much of the event focusing on hands-on activities, visitors will have the chance to get stuck into all sorts of pastimes that let them explore their more adventurous side, including a climbing and abseiling wall and a demonstration diving tank. The first UAE National B-Boy Championships will also take place at the event, showcasing some of the country’s best breakdancing and bodypopping talent. Organised by the Urban Roots Society, the championships follow a year of monthly meets at Mall of the Emirates and should be a pretty impressive spectacle.

‘The show is the first and only complete outdoor adventure and sporting event of its kind to be held in the UAE,’ says Dubai WTC senior vice president Trixee Loh. ‘It features more than 40 participating companies, representing some of the biggest international consumer brands.’ Sounds pretty good to us – we’ll see you at the climbing wall.

Outdoor Adventure Dubai is at Dubai World Trade Centre on December 17-19, 4pm-10pm. Adults Dhs20; under 12s go free. Joint entry tickets for the show and the Dubai Motor Show are Dhs50. Call 04 308 6362 or visit

Don’t miss these essential hands-on attractions, all of which are free to try as part of your entry ticket.
Dive pool
Committing to a full diving course can be daunting (not to mention pricey), so here’s your chance to test the waters. This 15-minute discovery course allows you to don full scuba equipment and submerge yourself in a specially created dive pool. As well as familiarising you with all the gear, plus the sensation of breathing underwater, the PADI-trained instructors will also offer tips on snorkelling.
Sessions run from 11am-5pm, with a break at 2pm

‘The Wall’
Hosted by Dorell Climbing, which runs the specially created climbing wall on the side of Dubai World Trade Centre Club, this is an opportunity not only to ascend, but also to abseil your way back down. Dorell staff will be on hand to offer on-the-spot tips and instruction (plus plenty of encouragement, we’re told), including demonstrations throughout the day. If you’re feeling particularly daring, you can even challenge your friends on the specially created ‘speedwall’ – race to the top in the quickest time and score some decent prizes. Full instructions on speedwall tactics will be provided.
Visitor tryouts start at 4pm during the weekend, with speedwall competitions at 6.15pm on Thursday and 7pm on Friday and Saturday. The UAE Speedwall Championship is at 7.30pm on Saturday

Unlimited paintballs
Paintball can be a pricey affair, particularly if you’re prone to firing off your rounds at all angles. Get in some range time with an unlimited supply of paintballs at this event co-ordinated by Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club.
