Get ready for war as the paintball battle lines are drawn. We speak to the founder of the Dubai paintball club about the colourful combat.
Time Out talks to Vaughan Fears, one of the founders of Dubai Paintballing Club, to find out how we can enter the upcoming competition.
These are monthly events, how did the last one go? The last one was in Sharjah, it was a really good turnout. A total of 24 teams participated, with five players on each side. It’s a real mix of nationalities – we had teams of made up of people from the Philippines, teams of Europeans, three full Emirati sides and then loads of mixed teams.
How do we get in there? For the tournaments, you need to register your team in advance, but we do have forums online (www.dubaipaintballclub.com) where you can find people looking for a team or find a team for yourself.
Where’s the next event and what can we expect? It’s over at Al Jazira Beach Club, which is in Ghantout on the border with Abu Dhabi. We try to keep a version of paintball called ‘speedball’, in which you have to capture the flag, but we’re looking to introduce scenario games where you have to complete objectives. Each team will probably play eight games and from that we’ll take the highest points and rank teams from there. We’ve got a playing field in Ghantout and are using bunkers made out of tires and old junk. The tyres make a change, because it’s not a flexible bunker. When we do it with inflatables people can shape the bunkers and use them to their advantage. It’ll be an interesting tournament.
