Time Out Dubai staff
What brings you to the UAE? I’m here for the HSBC Abu Dhabi Golf Championships. Midland Bank sponsored me when I played tennis, then it became part of HSBC. As a golf addict, I’m happy to be an ambassador for the event.
What is your career highlight and why? Wimbledon is the pinnacle of tennis and it was always the tournament that I wanted to play in and one I wanted to win. It was one of my greatest highlights, but also one of my biggest disappointments. That said, beating Roger Federer on centre court in 2001 is a great memory I’ll never forget.
How do you think the modern playing style of Nadal or Federer compares with the likes of John McEnroe or Fred Perry? The technology, techniques, surfaces and conditions have all changed. Put Rod Laver in the modern era and he’d be one of the best tennis players in the world.
Who is your tip to win the HSBC Golf Champs? I’d like to see Rory McIlroy win it for the first time.
What do you like to do when you’re in the UAE? Play golf and enjoy the sun while I can.
