The Dubai fitness scene is abundant with hardy souls who seem to live life waiting for their next challenge – a benchmark against which to test their grit. So when it was announced that a home-grown obstacle race would be making its Dubai debut, a wave of anticipation spread through the city’s workout fraternity. Sandstorm Marmoum will be a challenge with a difference, raced over two distances and seeing competitors take on four distinct terrains (rock, sand, water and mud) as they battle over more than 40 obstacles for either 5km or 10km.
Taking place on Friday February 10 at Al Qudra Lakes, the event has even attracted royalty, with His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, set to lace up his running shoes and tackle the intricately designed course.
The race is being driven by Dubai Holding, a company that’s no stranger to backing big sporting events in the city, such as the Dubai Marathon. But unlike said marathon, you don’t have to be a complete fitness freak to compete at Sandstorm Marmoum. In fact, according to the organisers, you don’t even have to be in fantastic shape. They say those who can walk 5km without needing to sit down and catch their breath are more than welcome to sign up – just as long as they’re not an “undue burden” on other participants and don’t mind getting a little dirty, wet or scuffed up.
Okay, so that might not be everyone’s idea of fun but there’s much more to Sandstorm Marmoum than just the race. All the action will be relayed by drones on to big screens in the Race Village, while there will be food trucks and activities to keep the kids happy. Oh, and did we say there were prizes for the winners? Count us in. From Dhs350. Fri Feb 10, 8am. Al Qudra Lakes, Al Qudra Road, www.sandstormdxb.ae.
