Time Out has travel advice from the experts. Here, we speak to Travel Counsellors’ Sharan Hussain about how to save money on your summer holiday
Everybody loves a bargain. Be it hitting the malls during sales, a two-for-one at a restaurant or a kids-go-free day out, there are few greater pleasures than saving some of your hard-earned cash.
The same rings true of travel, with most holidaymakers spending hours scouring through websites before plumping for what they consider to be the best deal. A lot of us don’t know where to begin looking, though, and that’s where experts such as Sharan Hussain come into their own.
The Dubai-based globetrotter has 12 years’ experience in the industry and is part of Travel Counsellors, which will take the pain out of booking your trip. She believes now is the right time to book your summer sojourn. “A number of good deals are available for holidaymakers at the moment, with savings on package holidays combined with competitive airfares and early booking discounts – for instance, worldwide cruises are very popular with me at the moment,” she tells Time Out.
“Hotels are also offering special rates, stay/pay offers and extra value-added benefits, such as half-board stays at the price of a bed and breakfast room.”
With so many flight destinations to choose from in Dubai, Hussain knows how lucky we are to be at such a travel epicentre. And although Oman, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and Mauritius remain popular for bargain hunters, Vietnam, Cambodia, Cyprus and Greece are also offer competitively priced.
Hussain says early birds will always get the best deal. “Rates are at their highest when availability is at its lowest, and while last-minute deals may pop up for rooms, they are not guaranteed to, particularly if you have your heart set on a specific resort or hotel. If you’re travelling with a partner or with family, it’s always a good idea to book in advance for peace of mind.”
