Al Rigga is the very definition of ‘bustling neighbourhood’. A residential and commercial centre in Deira, there’s bartering, bright lights, and almost everything you could ever want to eat on one street, from fast food to high-end Japanese cuisine. It’s also home to one of Dubai’s most recognisable landmarks, Deira Clock Tower.

Taj Palace Hotel: Even from the outside this hotel oozes sophistication and luxury. One of the few five-star hotels in Dubai that doesn’t serve alcohol, its appeal lies in the traditional Arabic feel. It also has an excellent spa that offers authentic ayurvedic treatments (Indian holistic healing). If you’re after somewhere to eat, be sure to try Handi, which serves up excellent North Indian cuisine.

Al Safadi Restaurant: This Lebanese restaurant is the perfect spot to take a break from the hustle and bustle by indulging in some manakeesh, falafel and creamy houmous. Elegantly decorated, the ambience makes it ideal for a long chat over shisha.

Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation: The foundation hosts a number of cultural events and serves as a platform for seminars on a range of topics (check website for upcoming events). These are free and open to the public, but are only conducted in Arabic. There is also a library with several Arabic titles.

Inch by Inch Ladies Slimming House: Cruelly located in the same building as boutique chocolatier Patchi, this place offers several fitness therapies for women. They have body care treatments like waxing, facials and manicures but also toning tables and saunas to help the fairer sex get into shape.

Gift Gallery Centre: Are you one of those people that just cannot pass up a cheap deal, even if you don’t really need a novelty spatula? If so, this is the place for you. There are all sorts of odds and ends on offer, from kitchen utensils to jewellery and gift items, and all for dirt cheap. It’s great fun to browse through the aisles, if nothing else.

China Star Restaurant: Stop by here at lunch to enjoy a buffet meal for only Dhs18. That’s right, Dhs18! Try to make it a one time only thing, however – repeated visits to an ‘all you can eat’ establishment for Dhs18 doth not a healthy individual make.

Al Rahma Chinese Medical Centre: While this little store only stocks traditional Chinese herbal medication (which can only be bought with a doctor’s prescription), it also offers Chinese massages. Massages for men are more therapeutic while ladies’ massages are for relaxation. And at a cost of Dhs100 for an hour, we’d definitely recommend checking it out.

Sedar: Sedar has built up a reputation for its quality blinds and curtains. Worth a look if you’re planning on giving your home a makeover.

Al Samadi Sweets: This popular Arabic sweet store is just across the road from the station and is definitely worth the walk. Plates piled high with traditional sweets and biscuits are guaranteed to abate your sugar cravings, and give you that extra energy to keep on pounding Al Rigga’s streets.

Al Khaleej Palace: It’s a bit of a walk from the station, but there are some great dining options to choose from once you get there, so it’s well worth your while. Our picks are Kisaku, one of the best Japanese restaurants in Dubai; the Velvet Lounge on the 10th floor, good for a quick bite or just relaxing with a drink and taking in the Dubai skyline; and let’s not forget Escoba, where not only can you enjoy a Lebanese feast, but entertainment from Arabic singers and belly dancers, too.
