2 Rashidiya Library: A rarity in Dubai, the Rashidiya Library has a small collection of English and Arabic reference and fiction books, plus a children’s books section. Membership lasts five years and costs Dhs210 for adults. You can also surf the web for Dhs3 per hour, or free if you are a member.

3 Bin Sougat Centre: One of the biggest landmarks in the area, the shopping centre is a bit of a walk from the metro station but worth every minute of it. You’ll find all the big-name stores for fashion, as well as a big Spinneys supermarket. It also has several places to eat, from the well-known Indian restaurant Gazebo to the Lebanese food chain Automatic, and there’s FunCorner to keep the kids busy.

4 Rashidiya Corner Café: This place offers burgers, shawarmas, falafel and fresh juices like most of the other cafés in town. Yet, due to its prime location next to the Bin Sougat Centre, it’s almost always full of customers.

5 Union Cooperative Society: The Coop is usually quite crowded and families can be seen coming out with their shopping carts piled up to the brim – but this is surely a sign of good value and, sure enough, the grocery store is known for its cheaper rates and promotions. There is also a Damas jewellers shop next door if you do get the urge to splurge.
