Four Points by Sheraton: On the other side of Sheikh Zayed, this hotel is worth crossing the bridge for thanks to Charlie’s – it’s English-style pub. Great for lunch, it differs from others of its sort because of its great music and large TV screens. There is also an awesome selection of wine and beer and special meal deals. Plus, there’s no hour like happy hour (or two) from 6pm-8pm.

DIFC Shopping: You need a seriously fat wallet to shop at DIFC. There’s Villa Moda, with a unique men’s section, Vivienne Westwood – a slightly watered-down version, but funky and individual nonetheless – and Andrew Martin, which feels like you’re on a Bond film set: it’s packed full of one-off and vintage furniture pieces – with the odd elephant thrown in for good measure (seriously).

Zuma: Sleekly designed and hugely hyped, Zuma was a worthy winner of Time Out’s 2009 Best Japanese Restaurant award. Expect slick service and a buzzing atmosphere. It’s not cheap but, if you’re feeling the pinch, go for the set lunch menu at Dhs110.

Cuadro: Expect five or six different exhibitions going on at once in this labyrinthine art gallery that has ‘museum status’ because of its size. Don’t be put off by the profusion of security guards hanging around, though, they’re waxworks. It’s a contemporary and clever spot that’s worthy of attention on any gallery hop.

Caffè Florian: The original café in Venice is known to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest coffee house in Europe. Three hundred years of history is a tough act to follow and Caffè Florian hasn’t captured the large crowds it needs to fill the two floors. But there are some decent dishes at very reasonable prices and the desserts are real standouts.
