As the UAE celebrates its 42nd National Day we take a look at some of the people who are quietly helping put our city on the map, and contributing to its continued success through their bands, brands and beyond.

This Monday December 2, the country will be looking back on another year of successes. The number of millionaires in the UAE is expected to grow by 13.5 percent by the end of 2013, taking the total to 54,600 according to a new report by WealthInsight (a global database of high net worth individuals), compared with 48,300 in 2012, while the country also jumped five places on this year’s Global Competitiveness Index (produced by international organisation World Economic Forum, which brings together businesses and politicians from all over the globe) to number 19. From hotels to parks, restaurants to shopping malls, we’ve seen a huge number of openings this year. But it’s not just the big things that make Dubai great – there are many small businesses and individuals who come from far and wide who are helping promote its reputation as a haven of creativity, excellent food, sporting achievements and humanity.
