Dubai in pictures: Then and now

We step back through the decades for a closer look at Dubai's most iconic structures as you’ve never seen them before

Taken in 1996, the image on the left shows the Burj Al Arab foundations completed (works began in 1994), with construction under way on the world-famous hotel’s structure. By 1999, the iconic property was ready to host its first guests.

Pictured left is Dubai’s Al Fahidi Fort (Dubai Museum) in the 1970s, before the old Bastakiya wind towers were knocked down and redeveloped.

Dubai World Trade Center is seen here in 1986. The landmark 39-storey tower was the tallest in Dubai and the UAE when it was built by the late ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum in 1976.
